FCT NOVA
FCT NOVA is one of the most prestigious Portuguese and European engineering and science public schools. It is engaged in extensive research activity developed in 16 research centres involving 1600 PhD and Master’s students of the total enrolment of 8000. FCT NOVA has a broad expertise in cutting edge R&D+I due to a multidisciplinary nature and strong experience in fundamental and applied research projects, ranging from materials, environment and biotechnologies to conservation and restoration. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (DCEA) and the RD&I Units, MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre and CENSE – Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research, whose professors and researchers have know-how and teaching experience in Marine Sciences, Technology, Governance and Literacy, and Sustainability.

MARE
MARE is a centre for research, technological development and innovation classified as Excellent RD&I Unit by FCT (the national funding agency for science, technology and innovation), with seven units located across Portugal (mainland and islands), including the unit at FCT NOVA. MARE is leader of two of the seven Strategic Thematic Lines of Research, namely, Environmental Risk and Governance and Literacy. The main goals of MARE Strategic Program are:
- Improve the knowledge on the functioning of marine ecosystems, and interrelated estuarine and freshwater systems;
- Develop scientific and technological tools towards the sustainable use of freshwater, estuaries and marine ecosystems under the framework of regional, national and international priorities;
- Develop scientific knowledge and sound technology to help providing food and other biotic and non-biotic resources to society;
- Promote good ecological and healthy status of oceans and seas, estuaries and river basins;
- Drive international cooperation to advanced education and training resulting in a new generation of scientists and professionals prepared for the Blue Economy;
- Promote Ocean literacy and contribute to a participative Blue Society.
