Project

SCOPE

The Blue Growth strategy focuses on the concept of Blue Economy which emphasizes conservation and sustainable management. This means that all economic activities related to oceans, seas and coasts must be in balance with the long-term capacity of the resources. As such, the blue economy brings new initiatives in the area of personnel training and learning in a wide range of interlinked maritime established sectors.

In order to achieve Blue Growth, it was highlighted by the European Commission the need of highly qualified and skilled professionals. However, several constraints are delaying or even disabling the training and education in several sectors of Blue Growth, such as: a) the skill gap between the existing education offer and technology developments and innovation b) the lack of communication and cooperation between education and industry.

AIM

Within the scope of the EEA Grants and Blue Growth Programmes, the Marine Science, Technology, and Society Education Programme aims at developing and implementing two editions of a transdisciplinary Postgraduate Programme at NOVA School of Science and Technology. This will contribute to the development of a new generation of professionals with knowledge and skills oriented to the sustainability of marine and maritime areas, in the multiple environmental, technological, and social dimensions.
