Marta Martins (MM) is Assistant Professor at NOVA SST where she is active in teaching and supervising master and PhD candidates. She coordinates the Marine Science, Technology and Society Education Programme, and the Post-graduation in MSTS at NOVA SST.

MM is integrated researcher at MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, in which she coordinates the research group MARlab – Marine Research and Environmental Risk Lab.  MM holds a Ph.D. on Environmental Sciences and a Master degree in Ecology, Management and Modelling of Marine Resources by NOVA SST.

MM research interests are based on the One Health transdisciplinary approach, which includes environmental, animal and human health. The main research topics are related with the study of the mechanisms and interaction effects of mixtures of environmental pollutants (from chemicals to nano and microplastics) to improve the basis of Environmental and Human Health Risk Assessment Strategies and to contribute to sustainability. She is also interested in the development of new monitoring tools and new biomarkers. Her scientific research contributes to the Goal 2, 3, 4, 14 of the UN and to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

MM collaborates in several national and international scientific projects in marine areas. She is member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. She is a member of the SETAC Education Committee (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry). She is also certified by FELASA with the Laboratory Animal Science level C for directing animal experiments and by ESTIV and ASCCT on Applied In Vitro Toxicology.
